The Strada Statale 106 “Jonica” is a critical transportation link in Southern Italy, connecting Reggio Calabria to Taranto over a distance of 491 km. The road spans the coastal regions of Calabria, Basilicata, and Puglia, serving as a vital artery that links these areas with the Autostrada del Mediterraneo (A2) and the Adriatic Highway (A14).

3rd Mega-Lot Construction

The most significant ongoing project along the Strada Statale 106 is the construction of the new road section between Sibari and Roseto Capo Spulico in the province of Cosenza. This 38 km stretch, featuring two separate carriageways, represents a significant investment of €1.33 billion. The project commenced on May 19, 2020, with an estimated completion date in August 2026.

Infrastructure Enhancements

The Jonica is being upgraded to a four-lane highway in several sections, with 67 km already expanded in Calabria, including areas near Rocca Imperiale, Gabella Grande, and Locri. These improvements are part of a broader plan by ANAS to enhance safety and service standards while minimizing environmental impact.

Integration with Other Major Roads

The SS106 will increasingly integrate with the A2 “Autostrada del Mediterraneo” through new connections like the SS280 “dei Due Mari” and the newly modernized SS534 “di Cammarata e degli Stombi,” which provides a critical west-east link.

Cimolai’s Contribution

Cimolai, a key contractor, will supply and install 27 metal decks for the 3rd Mega-Lot construction, utilizing S355 and S460 grade steel. This includes the construction of 20 viaducts/overpasses and 7 orthotropic plate viaducts, with a total steel weight of approximately 50,000 tons.
